He Will Save Us

He will save us!  Surely there has never been a more comforting, more needed, more concise promise to brokenhearted, spiritually poor, spiritually blind, spiritually naked sinners than this:  He will save us!

When I lack evidence, when my obedience is hypocrisy, when I find no assurance, when sin seems strong, when my heart is cold, when my prayers are mere thoughts, when memory fails, when troubles rage within, when opposition from without overwhelms me, and when I find no comfort, then I hang on these words, this promise:  He will save us!

Peter’s prayer received a swift answer, “Lord save me!” (Matthew 14:30). Never is there a more appropriate prayer, a more effective prayer, a more needful prayer from the heart and lips of God’s people, nor is there ever a prayer more pleasing to God than this one from an indebted, imprisoned, spiritually impoverished, helpless sinner, “Lord! Save me!”

This cry, this plea, this prayer springs from the heart of those who know God in Jesus Christ, who know they have nothing to bring, nothing to pay, nothing to depend upon other than God’s sovereign, almighty saving grace in Jesus Christ.

This is a most precious promise.  Here is the promise of God to His people, every brokenhearted, sin-contrite, conscience-smitten soul, “Lord, save me!”  This is a promise to every bankrupt sinner, whose only hope is that God will be gracious and find a way in righteousness to pay and to forgive the debt I owe, and give all that He requires so that I might be accepted and that He would think on me in kindness. I have nothing but my failure and sin and the expectation of certain wrath for what I am and what I've done and for what I will remain in myself to be. But this is my confidence in Christ, “Their sins and iniquities I will remember no more.”  And again, “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Listen to these precious promises God makes to helpless, hopeless sinners:

Isaiah 25:9   And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Isaiah 33:22   For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.

Psalms 145:19   He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them. (O, the mercy and grace of our God!!)

Isaiah 35:4   Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; he will come and save you.

Jeremiah 30:10   Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob (conniving deceiver), saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid. (see also, Jeremiah 46:27)

Zephaniah 3:17   The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
